Systems training in the virtual environment

Hi everyone - it's great to be on board with this great community.

We are well into our journey through the virtual environment but so far have delivered only soft skills and theoritical training via VLE. I have now been set the challenge of delivering systems implementation training via virtual learning - this is a really exciting challenge so I wondered if anyone in the community has experience of this and can provide some advice on how to approach this.

Many thanks

  • Hi Karen, thank you for sharing. That does sound like an exciting challenge!

Does anyone have any advice they can share with KarenĀ on delivering systems implementation training via virtual learning?
    How would you approach it?

  • Hej Karen, using VLE wouldn't be my first choice. Often a more task driven performance support solution with simple, step-by-step how-to guides is the ultimate solution to systems training.Ā

What would be the reason to go with VLE?

    • Thanks Jeff. The rationale behind considering VLE is time, cost and urgency. Lots of people to train in a short period of time.

  • Hi Karen, thanks for your post and great that you've had success so far!

Can you tell us a bit more about the systems implementation training? Is it about processes to follow? Is it software to learn to use? What kind of audience will you have and what will they be able to do?

You absolutely can do technical/software/systems training live online, but depending on what you are doing it might be best to include some other things with it to, as Jeff says :D

    • Thanks Jo - we have a new system being brought in and will be teaching both process (how to use it) and skill (customer service and sales) to support it. So, in essence using the system as a tool to support customer interaction. We will of course be using the VLE as part of a blended solution, utilising digital/e-learning and social learning as part of the approach.

      • Sounds good. I don't see why you couldn't do this with VLE. What is your worry/challenge/concern about more specifically?

        • I don't really have any worries, Jo, no more than the usual challenges to be encountered when starting a new project, but it's always great to gain input from peers and experts.

  • Hi Karen.

I agree with others inĀ that your learners will appreciate a blended solution. For the live online element, avoid long instructor-led demo's. Give learners control of your screen or ask them to share their screen and coach them through the processes. Manage group size so that everyone gets a go.

I'm helping a client convert a 3-day F2F systems training course into aĀ virtual learning solutionĀ and we are using virtual labs to create a customised learning environment for the learners. Cloudshare in this case.Ā Learners will use their individual environments in live onlineĀ and non-live sessions. Time-consuming to set up and can be expensive though.

    • Thanks Paul - I like the point about handing over control of my screen and hadn't considered that. I intend to use screen sharing a lot to check learning, but this option will, I think, be very effective - I appreciate your input, thanks again.
