  • Hi Francine, good question! First things 1st, what do you want people to be able to do after the activity? In other words i guess, what is the problem you are trying to solve?

    • Hi Angela,

      Thank you for replying...

Simply putting it - managers in busy environments and in 121s showing they are listening to what their team have to say.

They might regularly communicate to their team but do they listen to what they hear back.

      Hope that makes more sense.

      Thanks

      • Ah cool. U could look at things like empathy in leadership. I saw the Jo hosted a training journal webinar on this the other day (https://www.trainingjournal.com/webinar-recordings)

1 thing i've done sometimes is get people to list on a whiteboard the problems they have with their direct reports and then sort those into categories of how they can be fixed. adobe connect can sort them, but other software can't move text around so you might have to do it differently. the categories they can come up with, like training, coaching, they need to focus or whatever. what you can do as a trainer is get them to understand which ones would benefit from their understanding and input - in other words, listening!

        • Brilliant! thank you so much Angela!! We are using Adobe Connect so thats good to hear!

  • Hi Francine, great question. I always tell people that the best place to start, is not only the actions that people need to achieve in the workplace, but also what you might do in a face to face session. There's usually an online equivalent. So think of the right type of activity for this, and then explore how you can do that virtually.

It could be that you would normally have been role playing (which is a dirty word, so I sometimes say "co-coaching") which you might want to get people to do in breakout rooms with video.

Perhaps you want to get someone to describe a picture and get people to draw so that they can understand the impact of language - you could email an image to one person for them to describe; others draw it then show on webcam.

What kind of activities are you thinking of using?

  • Hi Francine. Such an important topic, and not easy to tackle virtually.

One thing I'm not quite clear on...

Are you aiming to train these managers to improve their listening skills in their face-to-face conversations (but training them virtually),  or do they also need to learn how to listen effectively when they meet their colleagues virtually?

    Thanks

    Paul
